Angela Lansbury has been officially made a Dame by the Queen at Windsor Castle today (April 15).

The Murder She Wrote icon described the experience as a “rare and lovely occasion”, Sky News reports.

She was joined in Windsor by her son, his wife and her niece as she collected the award for her services to drama, as well as her extensive charity work.

Dame Angela said: “It is a very proud day for me to be recognised by the country of my birth, and to meet the Queen under these circumstances is a rare and lovely occasion.”

The actress said that this milestone feels very different to the honorary Oscar she received last year.

“One (the Oscar) is for my work in motion pictures and this is for the overall accomplishments of my life as an actress,” she explained.

Dame Angela recently returned to London’s West End to perform in Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit at Gielgud Theatre.
