Actress Angela Bassett is to make her directorial debut with an upcoming TV movie based on the life of the late Whitney Houston.

Simply titled Whitney Houston, the film will air next year on US cable network Lifetime. According to US website Deadline, the biopic will follow Houston’s incredible rise as a singer and actress while also chronicling her rocky marriage to R&B star Bobby Brown.

Bassett, who starred alongside Houston in 1995’s Waiting to Exhale, said in a press release: “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story.

“Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

As an actress, Bassett was recently seen in American Horror Story: Coven – and she is set to return in the next instalment of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series, American Horror Story: Freak Show, due later this year.
