Adele tells Ellen she ‘cried all day’ after Grammys performance

By Troy Nankervis

Adele has opened up to US talk show Ellen DeGeneres about the technical difficulties that plagued her Grammys performance, while revealing she also still suffers from stage fright.

The 27-year-old singer said everything had been smooth sailing in the lead up to her Monday night (February 15) performance of ‘All I Ask’, until a pesky microphone changed everything during the commercial break.

“Sound check was great, it went really well, I was really excited, then during the break, the microphones fell onto the piano strings, which what the guitar noise was,” she said.

“Some people thought it was Bieber rehearsing, but it wasn’t him. It kind of put the whole thing off.”

Despite getting a little teary afterwards, Adele said in hindsight the performance had otherwise gone “okay”.

“I wanted to tell everyone straight away because there seemed to be a lot of confusion about what it [the technical issue] was,” she added.

“I was embarrassed. I woke up the next morning to people in England like, ‘we still love you’, and I was like, ‘I didn’t ask you if you still love me but thanks!’”

When Ellen asked if she genuinely had felt bad on Tuesday in the fallout of the glitch, Adele admitted to “spontaneously bursting into tears”.

“Oh, I cried pretty much all day yesterday” she said.

“I was quite embarrassed. But in fairness, I would have cried if it had gone really well, as well. If it was a stand out performance I would have cried as well. I always cry.”

Before performing ‘All I Ask’ on the US talk show stage, Adele also revealed stage fright was still a regular issue for her. “More than ever,” she said.

“I just [have] felt the more successful I get, the more pressure there is.”

“Further to fall?” asked Ellen.

“I don’t think it could go that much worse than the Grammys though, so I feel like I’m alright now. Anything that happens, I can just dust that off.”
