Universal Pictures’s upcoming Britney Spears biopic has found its writer, with Emmy nominated Liz Meriwether set to bring the singer’s life to the big screen.
The film will be based on Spears’ 2023 bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me, charting her journey from childhood in Louisiana to global pop superstardom.
Spears’ life has been far from smooth sailing, with the film expected to explore the challenges she has faced in her family life, conservatorship and past relationships.
Wicked film creatives work on Britney Spears biopic
The film reunites the creative team behind the beloved Wicked films featuring Ariana grande and Cynthia Erivo, with filmmaker Jon M. Chu directing and Legally Blonde collaborator Marc Platt producing.
Meriwether has been recognised for her screenwriting work, with credits including Single Parents and Bless This Mess, as well as co-creating the FX limited series Dying for Sex and Hulu’s The Dropout, several of which have earned her Emmy Award nominations.
Spears’s life has been nothing short of a feature film itself, making the upcoming biopic a must see hit as her life unravels on screen.
Spears enters rehabilitation facility after arrest
Recently, Spears entered a rehabilitation facility following her March 2026 arrest in Ventura County, California, for driving under the influence.
Spears was arrested for drink-driving on 4 March by officers from the California Highway Patrol, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records.
Following her arrest, Spears shared moments with her two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, on social media in late March.
Spears’s relationship with her two sons
She wrote on Instagram: “Thank you guys for all your support… Spending time with family and friends is such a blessing.”
The reunion marked a rare occasion for the Spears family following her turbulent relationship with her sons, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.
The DJ was married to the ‘Gimme More’ singer from 2004 to 2007 and has made numerous claims about the musician.
In his memoir, Thought You Knew, Federline claimed his then-teenage sons were scared to stay at their mother’s house.
As of writing this, a release date, and casting announcements are yet to be announced for Spears’ biopic.
