Ugandan tabloid newspaper names ‘200 Top Homos’

A Ugandan tabloid newspaper has published a list of what it describes on its cover as the nation’s “200 Top Homos”.
The list comes a day after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni (pictured right) signed a highly controversial anti-gay bill into law.
The bill means that gay people could face life imprisonment if they repeatedly break the law against homosexuality. It also makes it illegal to “promote” homosexuality, and will apply too to those who reach out to gay and lesbian people in the country.
The article in the Red Pepper newspaper is titled “EXPOSED!” and in addition to names features pictures of some of the so-called “Top Homos”. According to the Associated Press, the list includes a Catholic Priest, a popular African hip-hop artist and several of the nation’s leading LGBT activists.
After the list was published, LGBT activist Jacqueline Kasha – one of the so-called “Top Homos” named in the article – tweeted: “The media witch hunt is back. 200 Top Homos exposed in redpepper” and posted a picture of the newspaper, which appears below.
Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands have suspended aid to Uganda following the introduction of the new laws, while the US and Canada have both stated that they now intend to review their relationships with Uganda.
