Reports of homophobic incidents surge on social media following Trump elections

By Fabio Crispim

There has been a rise in reports on social media of hate incidents against minorities since Donald Trump’s election as US President.

According to Gay Star News Shaun King, the editor of New York Daily News, collated a number of reports of attacks and threats made against minorities on social media and has found a rise in them.

One such tweet King found includes a homophobic note a North Carolina couple said was left on their car. The note reads, “Can’t wait until your ‘marriage’ is overturned by a real president.”

“Gay families = burn in hell. #Trump2016.”

However the hateful messages are being found across the country, including popular LGBT neighbourhoods.

The LGBT Pink Panthers Movement shared an image on Facebook from a Gay minister who found a homophobic note which had been left on his car in New York City.

The note read, “So, father homo – how does it feel to have Trump as your president? At least he’s got a set of balls. They’ll pull marriage back to where God wants it and take yours away.”

“America’s gonna take care of your f*ggity ass.”

And in another report, gay couple Aaron and Nik McFarland were targeted with abuse when their car was vadalised at their home in Ogden, Utah.

Th graffiti read, “die homo” and “f*ggot”.

These messages follow a number of public attacks, threats and hateful messages that have been directed at minorities since Trump’s win as President earlier this week.
