A new survey has found that almost 20 percent of Grindr users are hiding their sexuality.

On June 16, the company behind the gay dating app polled over 3,000 of its 1.4m daily users from around the world to find out how many are still in the closet.

The survey also asked when and why those who have come out decided to do so, Echelon Magazine reports – as well as to whom.

Some 18 percent of those surveyed said that they have yet to reveal their sexuality to their friends and family, while a further six percent admitted that they plan on never coming out.

Meanwhile, over half of the gay men surveyed (53 percent) revealed that they have had a sexual experience with a woman.

The survey also found that Grindr users in their thirties and forties were most likely to have come out in their twenties, while users now in their twenties were mostly likely to have come out in their teens – suggesting the average “coming out” age is getting younger.

According to the survey, the most common reason for coming out is a desire to be true to yourself. An overwhelming 96 percent of Grindr users who have come out are out to their friends, while 81 percent have also come out to family members and 68 percent have discussed their sexual orientation with workmates.

Earlier this year, Grindr use tripled at the Winter Olympics in Sochi despite Russia’s anti-gay laws – click here to find out more.
