Is Adele’s success really down to Sarah Palin?

By Ben Kelly

It’s certainly an unlikely admission, but on her BBC special this Friday night, Adele implied her meteoric success in the U.S. is partly down to Republican politician Sarah Palin.

Speaking to Graham Norton, Adele explained how Palin was supposed to appear on the U.S. show Saturday Night Live the week after she was the musical guest, but when something came up in the election campaign, she was moved onto the show a week early.

“It was one of the most watched SNLs ever,” Adele explained, “and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot, which is when people decide what songs they want to maybe nominate, so, like, literally the stars aligned for me.” As we all know, the rest is history.

“The album shot to number one on iTunes and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one! It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!” Adele explained, with only a hint of tongue in cheek.

However, the former Vice Presidential candidate and Republican pundit – who is a well known opponent of same sex marriage – seized upon Adele’s comment, and wrote her a gushing thank you note.

“Adele, You look so great! So beautiful! So … Rumor Has It you recently threw me some credit for your amazing success – very kind coming from Someone Like You! Congrats on motherhood. Keep Setting Fire to the Rain.”

Always primed for a bit of self publicity, the note was tucked inside a copy of Palin’s new book Sweet Freedom. That’ll send little Angelo right off to sleep…
