Fox News vice president slams US Winter Olympics team for being too ‘dark, gay and different’
In an op-ed for Fox News, John Moody claimed diversity wouldn't help win medals
Fox News executive vice president John Moody has slammed the US olympics team for being too diverse.
In an op-ed for Fox News, Moody criticised Team USA for making the 2018 Winter Olympics more “darker, gayer, different” rather than “faster, highter, stronger”.
Moody also claimed that a more diverse team wouldn’t help win medals.
He wrote: “Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger.’ It appears the US Olympic Committee would like to change that to ‘Darker, Gayer, Different.'”
He added: “If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work.”
Moody then quoted a US Olympic Committee official who expressed pride at having the most diverse US team in Winter Olympics history.
He wrote: “That was followed by a, frankly, embarrassing laundry list of how many African-Americans, Asians and openly gay athletes are on this year’s US team.
“No sport that we are aware of awards points – or medals – for skin colour or sexual orientation.”
He then argued that athletes were being chosen for “PR reasons” rather than their skill and experience. However, he seems to have forgotten that freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy won silver at the Sochi Olympic Games, one year before coming out.
Moody’s op-ed comes after openly gay athletes Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon, who thought he’d never be able to come out, joined the US Olympics team. Meanwhile, Moody’s op-ed was slammed on Twitter, with many calling it “disgusting” and “dumb”.
