An American man went into hospital for a routine circumcision last month (June), but woke up to discover his penis had been chopped off, he has claimed in a lawsuit.

The 59-year-old man is suing Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama for medical negligence following the allegedly botched operation, the AP reports.

In a lawsuit filed this Tuesday (July 22) the man claims that he “never gave consent for the complete or partial amputation of (his) penis”.

In his lawsuit, the man also alleges that he was never told the circumcision could result in the loss of his appendage – and claims that he has suffered additional pain during his recovery, as well as having to spend more money on medical bills.

In addition to the above claims, the man’s wife is suing for “loss of consortium” – which means being deprived of benefits because of injuries caused to a family member.

The lawsuit does not specify how much money the man and his wife are seeking in damages.
