OutSavvy’s guide to November

By Josh Lee

Halloween is over.  The pumpkins have all sagged into soggy mess but the party is not over – not in November. In the run up to Christmas there are heaps of diverse and interesting events we know you’ll love. Below are just a selection of different things for you to do as the winter nights draw in – some cultural and, er, some decidedly not… From comedy to cabaret to cinema to clubbing, and a UN-traditional smutty gay panto, ‘Bendover in Boots.’ Because it’s not Christmas without panto!

Aeronaught Comedy Thursdays – November 10th and 17th

Every Thursday night Laugh Train Home will be bringing you some of the best comedians from the circuit and TV to the little big top. Alongside some grade A comedians, there’s also great food & beer so you can wet your whistle while you laugh! Past acts include Josh Widdicombe, Bob Mills & even Bobby Davro (Yes, he’s one of the few 80’s entertainers who didn’t end up in prison!).

Royal Vauxhall – Royal Vauxhall Tavern – November 16th, 23rd, 24th

The story of the wildest night in the history of the capital’s most iconic gay venue! It’s 1988 and queer London is partying hard under the spectre of AIDS, the scrutiny of the press and the shadow of Clause 28. When Princess Diana dreams of a wild night out away from the long lenses of the paparazzi and the ruthless Royals at the Palace, best buddies Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett know there is only one place to take her – the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. The only trouble is… how the hell are they going to get one of the most famous faces in the world through the door without blowing her cover?

Prince Bendover in Boots – Royal Vauxhall Tavern November 17th

The RVT panto is back, oh yes it is! This years’ unconventional offering is Prince Bendover in Boots, a tale about a really simple lad; Cumalot the millers son, Prince Bendover – a horny royal, a Pushy Princess, an Ogre and a Cobbler (who all look remarkably similar) and a larger than life dame called Bubbles with a sass mouthed cat, Dolly, wearing a powerful pair of thigh length, jewel encrusted, BDSM, patent leather Boots that confers stardom and power. Another rip-roaring panto from the RVT filled with panto classics, hissing, booing and enough songs, dance and glitz to make a Britney Spears concert look positively pedestrian, all bought up to date for you big dirty kids aged 18 and over. Featuring some of our favourite drag queens. Book now!

Cinema – BFI & Picture House Central – various dates throughout November

BFI Flare LGBT monthly film event is showing ‘Portrait of Jason’. This cult documentary about a charismatic chain-smoking hustler offers a timeless snapshot of Black queer America in the 1960s. Meanwhile The Picture House Central is showing ‘Bound’ (1997), classic queer ‘90s cinema directed by the Wachowskis
