Ibiza, Defected and Glitterbox: A love letter to the dancefloor

Ibiza is one of those places that seems to exist somewhere between myth and reality. Everyone who has ventured to the legendary White Isle seems to have a story – whether it’s the sunrise after an unforgettable night or the strangers who become lifelong friends on the dancefloor. It’s been on my travel hit list for as long as I can remember and, as someone who doesn’t need much convincing to spend my weekends surrounded by good music and even greater people, I was more than ready to see what all the fuss was about.

Look, it’s no secret that Attitude loves a good party, and my three-day trip to Ibiza delivered exactly that – in spades. My first night was spent at Defected, which is kicking off its first year at Chinois Ibiza. Chinois feels like the perfect home for Defected – intimate enough to stay connected to the music, yet still spacious enough to lose yourself in the crowd and its energy – a venue that gets the atmosphere just right.

Music is ultimately one of the main pillars of what has given Ibiza its legendary status over the years, and what can I say about the music?

Thursday night’s vibe began with Paisley Jensen infecting Chinois with her groove-filled set, making it clear why the UK DJ is quickly building a loyal following in the dance scene. Oden & Fatzo then took things to another level with their signature blend of deep house and infectious rhythms that had me doing my signature, yet slightly cliché, two-step dance move while they played. Their forthcoming Defected LP has shot straight to the top of my must-listen list, and I’ll almost certainly be playing it at all my pre-drink events, recommending it to friends as if I’d discovered them first. The energy never dipped as Bastian Bux and Defected favourite Sam Divine took control of the decks. Blending house classics with fresh cuts and underground gems, both delivered effortlessly curated sets that kept the dancefloor moving.

Closing at Chinois was German DJ and producer Emanual Satie, whose blend of deep, melodic house provided a perfectly hypnotic finale. His 2025 Defected hit ‘Give It All’ continues to dominate the dancefloor, and his masterful set had the energy soaring until the very last track, ensuring my debut at Chinois ended in unforgettable style.

Finding your people on the dancefloor

What stayed with me most after Chinois had closed its doors for the night was the people. For my first introduction to an Ibiza night out, it’s clear to see that Defected is more than a club night; it is a community of people brought together by a shared love of house music. Every generation, every background, and every corner of the world is represented on this dancefloor.

The next day, fuelled by little more than excitement and not many hours’ sleep, it was time for round two: Glitterbox at the legendary Amnesia, a venue that needs little introduction to those of us partial to a party. Amnesia has been at the heart of Ibiza’s nightlife for 50 years, and walking through its doors felt like a genuine bucket-list-ticking moment.

We were greeted into the night by Aline Rocha, whose captivating house grooves instantly set the tone for the night ahead. Glitterbox has become synonymous with celebration, self-expression, and unapologetic joy – with its iconic dancers playing just as much of a role in building the experience as the DJs themselves. Although it isn’t explicitly promoted as an LGBTQ+ event, it is easy to see why the night has become such a favourite within the community.

Then came Grace Jones. Her set may have been short, but it was nothing short of unforgettable. Decades into her extraordinary career, she remains every bit the icon and the legend. She effortlessly commanded the room with a presence few artists could ever hope to match. The roar from the crowd said it all.

Following Grace Jones, Bellaire, DJ Holographic, Natasha Diggs, The Shapeshifters and Horse Meat Disco kept the momentum firmly on the dancefloor. Each brought their own distinct sound, seamlessly building on the energy and ensuring Glitterbox’s signature atmosphere of joy, freedom, and world-class house music never missed a beat.

Bringing the night – and my short but sweet whirlwind Ibiza adventure – to a close was Armand Van Helden. From the opening track to his final beat, he had the entire dancefloor playing in the palm of his hand and had me longing for the night to never end. His set, combined with Glitterbox’s dazzling performers, explosive confetti cannons, and an atmosphere that never let up, felt less like a club night and more like an experience I will never forget. An experience I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who loves to dance.

Living in the moment

Perhaps the most refreshing thing about Glitterbox, though, wasn’t the production or even the music – it was the people. In our digital age, where so many experiences are viewed through a phone screen, hardly anyone seemed interested in filming. Instead, everyone was completely immersed in the moment, dancing with friends and strangers alike. That sense of collective freedom is increasingly rare, and it’s what makes Glitterbox so special. For one unforgettable night, the only thing that was important was the music.

In an era where the mainstream media seems to focus unnecessarily on what divides us, it should be no surprise to see music doing what it does best: bringing us together.

Being an LGBTQ+ person in Ibiza

Whilst neither Defected nor Glitterbox are exclusively LGBTQ+ events, both have earned a reputation for creating spaces where everyone is welcome. What’s impressive is that inclusivity doesn’t feel forced or performative – it’s simply part of the culture. For those hours spent on the dancefloor, labels disappear, barriers dissolve, and the only thing that matters is the next track. In a world that often feels dark, uncertain, and more divided than ever, it’s reassuring to know that the dancefloor remains the space where everyone belongs.

If this summer’s line-up is anything to go by, there’s plenty more to look forward to. Upcoming Defected and Glitterbox nights feature house music heavyweights including Carl Craig, Honey Dijon, David Morales, Kerri Chandler and Sam Divine, while Glitterbox’s closing party welcomes a special live performance from Jorja Smith.
