US ‘Pride’ DVD cover removes all mention of gays and lesbians

By Will Stroude

The US DVD release of Pride has removed all mention of the film’s LGBT themes.

The hit British movie, starring the likes of Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton and Bill Nighy, follows the true story of London’s Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), who supported a small Welsh mining community during the Miner’s Strike of 1984-85.

However, one Twitter user spotted that the film’s US Blu-ray cover has removed any mention of the group’s sexuality, referring to them simply as “London activists” – while an LGSM banner seen in the background of other promotional pictures appears to have been photo-shopped out.

Take a look at the cover below:

The user who spotted the omissions – @robwillb – wrote on Twitter: “Considering ‘we’re not going to pretend to be something we’re not’ is a major theme of the film, that copy is reprehensible.”

US film censors has already come under fire earlier this year after giving the film an ‘R’ rating – which means that children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult to see it – despite the fact the film contains no explicit sex or violence.

Pride was one of the big winners at the British Independent Film Awards earlier this month however, scooping three prizes – find out more here.

Meanwhile, following its critical and commercial success, the story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners could now be heading to London’s West End – read more here.
