Russell T Davies: ‘There isn’t enough full-frontal male nudity on TV’

Cucumber
creator Russell T Davies has argued that there isn’t enough full-frontal male nudity on television.
Davies – who reveals some in-depth details about Channel 4’s gay-themed drama in the latest issue of Attitude – has told The Telegraph that his intention with the show is to try and normalise social taboos, not just shock people.
“There is not enough male frontal nudity on TV. You’re far more likely to see a naked woman than a naked man,” said Davies. “It’s only [seen as] rude because the rest of television is rather tame – it doesn’t actually talk about sex and our bodies and how we feel about them. I’m not out to shock.”
He went on to suggest that there still aren’t enough gay characters featured in primetime TV shows, saying: “If you take the soaps out of the equation, you can still turn on prime television from 8pm onwards and on many nights of the week not a single gay character turns up.”
Meanwhile, the Queer as Folk creator has argued that television is “shockingly” white – find out more here.
