The singer has treated us to the first cut from his upcoming eighth studio album.

Rufus Wainwright is making a long-overdue return to contemporary pop with the release of his brand new single ‘Trouble in Paradise’.

The enigmatic musician, 46, has been keeping busy over the last few years with projects like 2015 opera recording Prima Donna and 2016’s Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets, but now he’s treating us to the first track from his upcoming eigth studio album.

Billed as a song “about the fashion world”, but on that “also applies to the state of the planet”, ‘Trouble in Paradise’ taps into 2019’s tense zeitgeist as Wainwright muses on the fronts we all create for ourselves.

“As soon as I got to LA I realised I wanted to make another of those good, old-fashioned records,” Rufus says of the new album.

“After the opera world and natural aging, I can now sing at the full power of my abilities, and this record really shows that off.”
