Joan Collins cast as Liz Hurley’s mother on ‘The Royals’

Joan Collins has been cast as Elizabeth Hurley’s mother in forthcoming E! series The Royals.

The hour-long drama from the creator of teen drama One Tree Hill is set in modern-day London and follows the lives of a fictional version of the British royal family. The first ever scripted series commissioned by US showbiz network E!, it already seems destined to become a camp cult classic.

Collins, 81, will play the Grand Duchess of Oxford, the mother of Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley), who is described as “the only woman in the world more formidable and imposing: than her daughter”. Collins’ character will apparently enter the show with an “entourage and an agenda”.

“I am delighted to be part of this very entertaining project,” Collins told People.

A trailer for The Royals was released earlier this summer – click here to catch your first glimpse of Elizabeth Hurley playing the Queen.

The Royals will debut on E! in early 2015. There is no word yet on whether the show has picked up a UK broadcaster.
