Gay footballer Robbie Rogers’ life to be turned into TV comedy

The life of out gay footballer Robbie Rogers is being turned into a new comedy television series.

Universal Television is working on a new project, which will focus on the footballer’s experiences as the first professional out gay player, Deadline reports.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron’s Storyline Entertainment are developing the series, and will also serve as executive producers on the project. Rogers himself is going to serve as a producer, alongside Mark Nicholson, Storyline’s Vice President of Development.

The former Attitude cover star came out as gay in February 2013 after retiring from professional football, but later returned to game with LA Galaxy.

Speaking to Attitude earlier this year, he said: “Definitely in my career there were so many times when I struggled with my mental health. That affected the way I played.”

“25 years of self-hate doesn’t go away just because you come out,” he said, referring to his continued struggles with his mental health.
