Faye Dunaway to pen Mommie Dearest book?

By Ben Kelly

A recent publishing industry newsletter has hinted that Faye Dunaway may be writing a tell all memoir about her experiences filming one of Hollywood’s most infamous movies, Mommie Dearest.

The movie, based on the memoirs of Joan Crawford’s adopted daughter Christina, paints a picture of the Hollywood screen icon as an abusive mother, and has gone on to become a camp, cult classic. In various scenes Crawford is depicted whipping her daughter with a wire hanger, attacking her in front of a journalist, and even taking parts from her when she begins her own career as an actress.

Queerty have reported that a newsletter published by Publisher’s Lunch this week looks forward to “Academy Award winning actress Faye Dunaway’s recollections, stories and behind the scenes account of the making of one of Hollywood’s most iconic films, Mommie Dearest to Julia Cheiffetz at Dey Street Books, by Alan Nevins at Renaissance (World).”

The book would be the first time Dunaway has discussed the film at length, having long shirked any discussion of it in interview, after it nearly ruined her career. In her first autobiography Looking For Gatsby, Dunaway mentioned the film only briefly. Ironically, Joan Crawford herself once said that Faye Dunaway was the only actress of her generation who had what it took to become a real star.

Mommie Dearest was released in 1981 and won Razzies for Worst Picture and Worst Actress.
