Dolce & Gabbana appeared to question Victoria Beckham’s design abilities during a group interview with journalists at the ‘Glamour Of Italian Fashion 1945-2014’ event in London yesterday (April 1).

The former Spice Girl launched her first fashion collection in 2008 and won the ‘Designer of the Year’ prize at the British Fashion Awards in 2011. Her first standalone shop is set to open on London’s Dover Street this autumn.

Iconic Italian fashion duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are friends of Beckham’s, but said that they believe she stands alongside world-renowned brands like Zara and H&M rather than more traditional hands-on designers like the late Alexandra McQueen.

Gabanna said of Beckham: “She’s a friend. She make a good job but… for us, she don’t make the same way like a fashion designer. She become after many, many, many different things. She’s a designer but…”

Asked to rate Beckham’s designs, he replied: “She’s a fashion designer but it’s another… it’s different. John Galliano is a designer… Alexander McQueen.”

Hi partner Domenico Dolce then jumped in, describing “Victoria Beckham, Zara [and] H&M” as “professional” designers.

Meanwhile, Gabbana was on rather more enthusiastic about Vivienne Westwood, hailing the Grande Dame of British fashion as “one of the most important fashion designers in the world.”
