The fourth season of hit US show American Horror Story is to be carnival-themed.

The horror anthology series has previously taken place inside a haunted house, an asylum and a school for witches.

The show’s writer Douglas Petrie announced the new theme during the Nerdist Writers Panel podcast, saying: “Yes. It doesn’t have a title, but that’s the idea. Very roughly, that’s the idea.”

The show’s creator Ryan Murphy has previously revealed that the new season will take place in the ’50s – and confirmed that it will be the last featuring Jessica Lange. Lange has been with the show since season one, and has one two Emmys and a Golden Globe for her performances on the series.

The next season of American Horror Story will debut this autumn on FX. In the UK, the show airs on the FOX channel.
