Gay and lesbian couples will be able to legally marry in England and Wales from March 29th, 2014.

The government confirmed today (December 10) that ceremonies can take place in a registry or approved religious premises in three months’ time.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said in a statement: “This historic step will mean that, for the first time, every gay person in England and Wales will finally enjoy exactly the same rights as their heterosexual friends and family.”

Equalities Minister Maria Miller said: “Marriage is one of our most important institutions, and from 29 March 2014 it will be open to everyone, irrespective of whether they fall in love with someone of the same sex or opposite sex.”

She added that she is “working hard” to ensure that couples who wish to convert civil partnerships into marriages will be able to do so by the end of 2014, as well as married people wanting to change their legal gender while remaining married.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg tweeted: “Great news that same sex weddings will happen from 29th March 2014 #savethedate.”

The Scottish Parliament has provisionally approved legislation to introduce same-sex marriage, while the Northern Ireland Assembly is not currently considering legislation to allow same-sex marriage.

If you want to be among the first couples to marry in England and Wales you will need to give formal notice of your intention by March 13!
