Attitude’s Culture Award winner: John Tiffany

Transforming one of the world’s biggest franchises into a theatrical production is a bit of a challenge, to put it mildly. And when it comes to the most successful book series of modern times, there’s no room for error.
The world waited with baited breath to see if The Cursed Child would be a cultural phenomenon or a theatrical car crash when it was announced – but with director John Tiffany at the helm, there was never really need for doubt. Thanks to him, Harry Potter “the play” is an immense success. It’s just one of the reasons why he’s this year’s recipient of Attitude Magazine’s Culture Award.
John’s illustrious and diverse directorial career has given him the opportunity to imbibe a wide range of plays with his unique perspective, from Russel Tovey’s The Pass to Tony-award winning Broadway musical Once. While his CV may be more varied than most, there’s one common thread that runs through each.
“I’m attracted to people who are ostracised because of who they are or who they are perceived as being,” John says. “When you look at it like that, an orphan who spends the first ten years of his life living in a cupboard under the stairs is a perfect match for the 45-year-old.”
John was presented with his award by Harry Judd at tonight’s star-studded Attitude Awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue, hosted by Alan Cumming.
