Sam Smith on ex-boyfriend: ‘He was dangerous and unobtainable’

By Will Stroude

Sam Smith has opened up about his relationship with Jonathan Ziezel, saying that his former partner was “dangerous” but that he liked the “excitement” he offered.

In an interview with American GQ before the couple’s split, the 22-year-old revealed he had chosen the Like I Can back-up dancer over someone else who was “perfect” on paper.

“Like recently, I met two guys,” he said. “On of them on paper is perfect and ticks all the boxes. The other is dangerous and, well, he ticks boxes too.

“I’ve chosen him”, the Stay with Me singer added. “I want that excitement. I want something that’s unobtainable.”

Sadly Smith’s instinct appeared correct, after he announced that the relationship had come to an end last week (January 22). The six-time Grammy nominee introduced a break-up song during a gig in Toronto by saying he’d “had to do a similar thing” earlier in the day.

After meeting on the set of Smith’s Like I Can video, the couple first went public with their relationship at the start of the year with a series of loved-up pictures on social media.

Meanwhile, Smith – who was the only artist to sell over a million records in both the UK & US last year – seemingly responded to a vile rant by US DJ Howard Stern over the weekend, after the ‘shock jock’ derided him for being “fat, ugly and effeminate.”
