Media speculates on sexuality of Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz

By Ryan Love

As the investigation into Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz continues, various media outlets have speculated that the 27-year-old was gay.

The Daily Star carried the suggestion on it’s front page today (March 28) with the headline: ‘Pilot haunted by secret gay demons’. At present there is very little evidence to suggest he was gay or struggling with his sexual identity.

Lubituz is thought to have deliberately crashed his Airbus in the French Alps on Tuesday, killing 150 people on board Flight 4U 9525.

Evidence for the Daily Star’s suggestion appears to be thin, with multiple claims that was he was teased for having been a “trolley dolly”, as he had previously served as a member of cabin crew.

Pilot colleagues are also said to have nicknamed him ‘Tomato Andi’, referencing a derogatory slang term used to describe someone hiding their sexuality, with a tomato widely believed to be a vegetable when actually a fruit.

The article went on to describe him as a “troubled nightclubber”, while also claiming that “the David Guetta fan enjoyed partying at a German nightclub which holds boozy, circus-themed events involving drag queens and dwarves”.

Meanwhile, an ex-girlfriend, who reportedly worked as cabin crew alongside Lubitz last year, has given an interview to Germany’s Bild newspaper.

In the anonymous interview, she alleges that the pilot once stated: “One day I’m going to do something that will change the whole system, and everyone will know my name and remember.”

Lufthansa sources have said that the pilot did receive treatment for depression over 18 months, and was said to have suffered a “serious depressive episode” in 2009, while his time at flight school in Arizona was interrupted for several months.

While Lubitz’s health issues remain a focus, French investigator Jean-Pierre Michel has said that it “can’t be the only” serious lead in the on-going investigation.
