Watch: RuPaul’s keynote speech at first-ever DragCon in May

By Micah Sulit

Two months after the inaugural RuPaul’s DragCon held on May 16 and 17 in Los Angeles, World of Wonder has released a video of Ru’s keynote speech.

The crowd – which had drag queens as well as toddlers brought along by their parents – got to their feet and cheered loudly as Ru took the stage.

After saying that he has worked with World of Wonder’s Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey since meeting them in the mid-80s, Ru said, “Finding your tribe, finding your constituency and your comrades… that’s what this event is all about.”

In his speech, Ru acknowledged the sacrifices of previous generations to secure the freedoms we enjoy today and talked about the responsibility to educate young people about “the whole story” of the gay experience.

He also said, “This convention is a convention of people who understand how important it is to be yourself. And the most important thing you can do on this planet is become the realisation of your own imagination.”

The event was purported to be the first ever drag convention in the world and was attended by over 13,700 people.
