Teen accidentally comes out to family ‘in the worst way possible’

Everyone has a coming out story, but one teenage girl’s is going viral after she spontaneously came out to her family in the “worst way possible”.

In text messages which have been liked and reblogged almost a quarter of a million times on Tumblr since being post over the weekend (September 20), 16-year-old Katie explains to her friend Kai that a slip of the tongue during her homophobic grandmother’s rant against gays led to her revealing her sexuality.

“I may have just accidentally came out to my entire family in the worst way possible.” she wrote.

“My grandma was saying how gays are going to hell and I didn’t want to deal with it so I started to leave.

“My cousin asked where I was going.

“’Hell apparently.’

She adds: “What have I done?”

Posting the messages online afterwards, Katie wrote: “The most terrifying five minutes of my life, but now that it’s over, I’m kinda proud of this.”

Thankfully tough, the story had a happy ending. After her concerned followers asked for an update the next day, she recounted the aftermath of her accidental announcement.

“The door was shut before I realised what I had said, and then I ran into the bathroom, where I sent that text,” she wrote.

“While I was hiding in the bathroom, my cousin knocked on the door.

“‘You can come out now,’ she said, followed by ‘well, I guess you already did that, but…’

“Anyway, we took refuge in her room.”

She continued: “Apparently, after I left the room my grandmother turned to my mom and said something to the extent of ‘how could you let your daughter become a queer?’

“My mother, aunt, and uncle all went off at her for that one, there was quite a bit of yelling.

“After a while, my mother came upstairs and told me that she supported me no matter what, and then we left without talking to my grandmother.”

Aw, way to go Katie’s mum. And thankfully it seems like there’s light at the end of the tunnel for Katie’s relationship with her grandma too, as she called to apologise the next day.

“I have no idea how sincere this apology was because my mother was the one on the phone with her, but I am still invited to Christmas​”.
