Just how many straight guys have had gay sex?

By Will Stroude

A sweeping new survey on the sexual behaviour and orientation of US citizens has revealed some enlightening truths about just how many self-described ‘straight’ men have engaged in sexual activity with another man.

Researchers from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) interviewed more than 9,000 men and women ages 18 to 44 years between 2011 and 2013, asking them all kinds of questions about their sexual attraction and experiences.

According to the figures, released yesterday (January 7), 95.1% of men and 92.3% of women surveyed described themselves as “heterosexual or straight,” while 4.9% of men and 7.7% of women reported a sexual orientation other than straight.

1.9% of men and 1.3% of women described themselves as “homosexual, gay, or lesbian,” while 2% of men and  5.5% of women reported that the were bisexual.

A further 1% of men and 0.9% of women said they “don’t know” or refused to answer the question.

While 3.9% of all male respondents reported being either gay or bisexual, however, the number who said that they’d engaged in either oral or anal sex with another man at some point in their lives was much higher, at 6.2%.

Maths has never been our strong point, but we’d say that’s more than a few self-described straight guys engaging in a bit of cheeky experimentation.

The CDC’s findings are also notable for the increasing number of US men identifying as bisexual had from 1.2% to 2% since the last survey, conducted between 2006 and 2010.

The findings come hot on the heels of a groundbreaking poll last summer, in which almost half of British young people reported that they were neither 100% heterosexual nor 100% homosexual.
