Former Big Brother contestant Charlie Drummond was jailed for assault yesterday (Jan 31).

Drummond, also a former Mr. Gay UK regional winner, was found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court. He has been sentenced to 21 months in jail, local newspaper Shields Gazette reports.

The attack happened on a night out in Newcastle last April, when the former reality star was out celebrating his sister’s birthday.

Jamie Ritchie, the victim of the attack, told jurors: “He was giving verbals and punched me with his left fist in the face. I didn’t know what was going on, I tried to stop him. Then we went to the ground and that was it. I was on the floor and not able to get up and I had an excruciating pain in my ankle. I was then punched more times, I was trying to stop him punching me.”

As he gave the defendant his sentence, Judge James Goss QC told Drummond: “This was a sustained assault on a man who had done nothing to deserve it. As a result of the attack, he suffered really serious harm. It caused considerable pain and he required three operations under general anaesthetic to repair the damage that had been done. You have contested your guilt, which is your right, but by reason of doing that you have sought to blame everyone but yourself for what took place.”

Drummond himself has been the victim of an assault: he was attacked during a night out in 2007. He became famous when he finished fourth on the 2009 Channel 4 series of Big Brother.
