Church leaders claim Conchita Wurst caused Balkan floods
By Josh Haggis
Balkan religious leaders have suggested Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst is responsible for the recent devastating floods in the region.
Wurst, real name Thomas Neuwirth, has become a major talking point across Europe since she won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on May 10.
Meanwhile, this month (May) the Balkans have experienced their worst floods in over 120 years – leaving dozens dead and thousands homeless, The Daily Mail reports.
Patriarch Amfilohije, a senior Church figure in Montenegro, has apparently linked to the floods to Wurst’s growing popularity, and is quoted as saying: “This flood is not a coincidence, but a warning. God sent the rains as a reminder that people should not join the wild side.”
Meanwhile, Patriarch Irenej, who heads the Eastern Orthodox Church in Serbia, is quoted to have said the floods represent “God… thus washing [the nation] of its sins”.
During a recent appearance on BBC One’s The One Show, Wurst spoke about her critics, saying:
“I have to say that, when politicians say that I’m the reason that Europe will crush into pieces, I have to say, I’ve never received a bigger honour. They think I’m that powerful? Thank you. I don’t want to disappoint you, but I’m just a drag queen.”
Meanwhile, Wurst is rumoured to be joining Lady Gaga at the opening date of her European tour in Istanbul on September 16.
She will take to the stage at London’s G-A-Y club night at Heaven tonight (May 24) – her first performance in the UK since winning the annual Song Contest.
