RuPaul has discussed the casting of Drag Race‘s first trans male contestant Gottmik, while adding that the biggest lesson he’s taken from the show so far is to “keep an open mind.”

Gottmik made a huge impression on episode one of season 13 this week, with a killer lip-sync of Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Rumours’ [watch below].

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, RuPaul called the rising star “fantastic.”

“I keep moving with what the kids are doing”

In a video interview, Stephen asked drag icon Ru: “In 13 seasons of Drag Race, what’s the biggest lesson that you’ve learned?”

To this, the 60-year-old replied: “It’s to keep an open mind. I walked into this thing with an idea of what drag is, and the kids have a different idea, they keep changing it.

“This season we have a trans man who is on our show, who is competing with the other drag queens. This man is fantastic. So, you know, I keep moving with what the kids are doing.”

The interview marks a departure for Ru from controversial remarks made about trans contestants in 2018.

January is certainly going to be a huge month for the star: as well as the US show, he’s gearing up for the second series of Drag Race UK, launching Thursday 14 January 2021.
