Love, Victor has officially been renewed for season two, and the world feels that little bit brighter already.
The warm-hearted teen drama will return for a second series on Hulu after ranking as the US streaming site’s most-watched drama during its premiere week in June, Deadline reports.
Love, Victor – a spin-off of 2018 feature film Love, Simon – stars Michael Cimino) as Victor Salazar, 16-year-old new kid in town who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality.
Set in the same universe (and high school) as Love, Simon, the first 10-part series saw Victor deal with his growing feelings towards classmate Benji (George Sear) as he sought advice from Simon (Nick Robinson) via a series of emails.
Despite winning acclaim from fans and critics, the release of Love, Victor was marred in controversy after it was revealed that it had been transferred to Hulu from Disney’s newly-launched streaming service Disney+ over its supposed ‘adult themes’.
The move sparked concern that LGBTQ content was effectively being censored from Disney+, though the corporation was defended by Becky Albertalli – author of the novel on which Love, Simon was based, who insisted the move was motoviated by content such as underage drinking rather than same-sex kisses.
“There’s been speculation as for the cause of the platform switch”, Albertalli wrote on Twitter at the time.
“For what it’s worth, it’s not based on the show featuring a gay teen love story. Disney knew what it was when they got it. There are mature themes such as teen drinking, etc. that led to the switch.
“That said, I completely get why many of us are wary of phrases like ‘mature content’ and ‘adult themes.’ They’re so often used as homophobic dog whistles, and these concerns are so valid.
“But in this case, I do hope you’ll give Disney the benefit of the doubt.”
Either way, tuning in to Love, Victor season two will continue to remain a struggle for viewers in the UK, as unlike Disney+, Hulu is currently only available in the US. But for what it offers a generation of young LGBTQ viewers, we’re certainly glad it’s back.
