Pose star Indya Moore says she no longer identifies as non-binary

Indya Moore has announced a change to the way she identifies, saying she no longer considers herself non-binary and asking people to use she/her pronouns.
The actor shared the update on Instagram Stories on Monday night (31 August).
“I no longer identify as nonbinary. My pronouns are she/her. Please be kind to me. I may share more later,” Moore wrote.
She ended the post with the words “love, solidarity, peace and gratitude”.
What has Indya Moore previously said about her gender identity?
Moore previously identified publicly as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns. In 2019, she wrote on X: “I’m non binary, femme, Agender feels fitting too. My pronouns: they/them/theirs.”
Her comments came as Moore was becoming widely known for playing Angel Evangelista on FX’s Pose. The series, which premiered in 2018, followed New York’s ballroom scene and the lives of its LGBTQ+ characters during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Angel begins the series as a sex worker before pursuing a career in fashion. Her relationship with Papi Evangelista also becomes a central part of her storyline.

Moore has previously discussed how her experiences growing up had shaped her understanding of gender. In a 2019 interview with Elle, she said her parents “overdisciplined” her after she began displaying behaviour they considered feminine.
“Because I was assigned male at birth, they expected me to be masculine or to perform the way they thought young boys should perform. And I did not,” Moore said at the time.
She said the punishments became harsher as she expressed more of her femininity. Moore entered the foster-care system at 14 after leaving her family home and subsequently moved between foster homes, group homes and other placements.

Moore’s career developed through modelling before she moved into acting. She worked with brands including Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein and became the first trans person to appear on the cover of the US edition of ELLE in 2019.
Her performance as Angel on Pose brought further recognition. Moore was included in TIME’s 2019 TIME 100, its annual list of the world’s most influential people.
She has since appeared in films including Ponyboi and Father Mother Sister Brother, as well as the Netflix series The Sandman.
