A man has been arrested after “threatened to stab” gay train passengers leaving Brighton Pride over the weekend.

The man reportedly shouted homophobic abuse and threatened to pull a knife on passengers after boarding a train from Brighton to London Victoria in the early hours of Sunday (5 August), Metro reports.

Frightened Pride-goers filmed the shocking incident their phones, before sharing the footage online.

In one video posted to Twitter by journalist Benjamin Butterworth, the man can be heard saying: “Why are you so angry ’cause I’m calling you a faggot?”.

Sharing the footage, Mr Butterworth wrote: “A man threatened to pull a knife on me and others and stab us for being gay. He called us paedophiles and dirty and shouted gay people need to all be killed.

“The video is a fraction of what he said, as was too scared & shaken to film.”

Actor Marco De Marlo also shared a video of the incident on Twitter, in which the man could be seen squaring up to a young woman who was reportedly trying to film his homophobic tirade.

“This homophobe called everyone on a train returning from Brighton Pride a bunch of puffs and has threaten to stab someone that was looking at him”, De Marlo wrote.

“This is him taking the phone off the hands of a girl that was trying to record what was happening.”

In a separate tweet, he claimed he had reported the incident to the police, who arrested the man.

“After repeating “what are you puffs gonna do about it?” I contacted the British Transport Police and got him dragged off the train. In cuffs. This puff just owned your ass you fucking asshole.”

A spokesman for British Transport Police confirmed they had arrested a man for a public order offence, telling Metro: “We were called at 5.53am today following reports of homophobic abuse towards passengers on a train bound for London Victoria.

“Officers met the train and a 28-year-old man was arrested for a public order offence. He is currently in custody.

“Our officers are making enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”
