How many gay couples have married in Scotland already?

By Will Stroude

New figures have revealed just how many same-sex couples got tied the knot in the first three months since equal marriage was legalised.

Of the 3889 weddings that took place in Scotland between January 1 and March 31 this year, 462 were between same-sex couples – that’s one in eight of all marriages recorded.

The quartile between January 1 and March 31 2015 marks the first full quarter since the Marriage and Civil Partnerships (Scotland) Act 2014 came into force in December 2014.

An additional 250 couples in Scotland had already converted their civil partnerships into marriage before that period, after the legislation came into effect on December 16.

There were also 20 civil partnerships during the first three months of 2015 – 12 male and eight female – which was 57 fewer than during the same period in 2014, the Daily Record reports.

Colin Macfarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland, said: “The fact that nearly 500 same-sex couples have married since January shows just how important equal marriage is to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

“There can be no denying that the policy of equal marriage has been a huge success.”

Meanwhile, the Church of Scotland recently voted in favour of allowing congregations to ordain ministers who are in same-sex civil partnerships.
