Tulisa Constostavlos’s PA, Gareth Varey, has apologised for saying that Simon Cowell is gay.

Jurors at Constostavlos’s high-profile drug trial heard a recording of Varey telling undercover reporter Mazher Mahmood that he knows men who have had sex with the X Factor boss. Click here for full details of what Varey says in the tape.

Following the collapse of the trial on Monday (July 21), Cowell released a statement to the Press Association insisting what Varey said is a “false suggestion” – read his statement in full here.

Varey has now said: “I can no longer recall all of the details of that evening but I have listened to the recording made by Mahmood. I was clearly very drunk.

“At some point and utterly out of the blue Mahmood asked me if Simon Cowell was gay. I said he was. This is not true. I do not know why I said it, but assume it is because I was so drunk and felt that I was giving Mahmood the type of information he was seeking. I am very sorry for this.”

Contostavlos’s trial came to an abrupt end after the judge ruled that Mahmood had lied while giving evidence. The Young singer said that she intends to resume her music career, and thanked her lawyers and fans.
