Mary Lambert admits ‘Same Love’ fears: ‘I thought I was going to be murdered’

By Ryan Love

Mary Lambert has admitted that she feared being targeted for her part in Macklemore and Lewis’s hit single ‘Same Love’.

The equality anthem topped charts around the world in 2013, and earned a Grammy Awards nomination for Song of the Year. Lambert’s chorus led to her own single ‘She Keeps Me Warm’.

“I thought I was going to be murdered,” Lambert told the Huffington Post “But instead I got nominated for a Grammy!”

The singer recalled not knowing what kind of reaction the song would receive, but said that the “feeling of peace I got was knowing I was doing it right” helped her prepare for a backlash.

“Knowing I was ok with that let me know I was doing exactly what I needed to be doing,” she explained.

Lambert joined the duo to perform the song on their world tour, something she describes as a “really gratifying” experience.

“They were cheering and crying…10,000 people chanting my name. I had kids in rainbow shirts in front, looking at me… I couldn’t believe I was part of this thing that meant so much to so many people,” she said.

“All I wanted to do was make sure I was honoring it correctly and being a good representation,” said Lambert of the song. I couldn’t believe this was my life, especially after the shit show I’d been through. It was really, really gratifying.”
