‘Banana’ star Fisayo Akinade introduces his character Dean…

By Will Stroude

After weeks of build-up, Russell T Davies’ Cucumber and Banana finally hit screens tonight (January 22)!

In the new issue of Attitude we catch up with Fisayo Akinade who plays Dean, an exuberant, sexually adventurous (he wears a male chastity belt that’s been padlocked by his ‘master’ in the first episode) 19-year-old who works as a mail boy in the same office as the show’s lead, Henry Best (who you can find out more about here).

With Banana’s opening episode taking a closer look at Dean’s sexual exploits and family life, we thought we better get you clued up on what we can expect from the future fan-favourite…

“Dean is pretty sex-obsessed. And young. I think the two things go together!” Fisayo tells Attitude.

“We’re at a point now where sex is in the palm of your hand. You can find someone and be having sex with them within the hour. Dean is a bit more generous with his body than I am, but I can relate to certain things.

“What I really relate to most with Dean is his openness. He’s very much ‘what you see is what you get’. But you’ll never catch me wearing a male chastity belt!”

Fisayo goes on to discuss the, erm, rigours of filming the show’s multitude of sex scenes, saying he has to “commit” to the man-on man action.

“It’s funny with the sex scenes, you sort of dread them until you do them,” he explains.

“I remember thinking ‘so many people are going to see me naked!’ But in the end I thought: ‘It’s part of the story so I’d better get on with it. You can’t half-do scenes like that. You’ve got to commit.”
