Watch the gay South African advert that's been angering homophobes
The Elton John Aids Foundation partnered with Anova Health Institute to release a video for their gay sexual health campaign, 'We The Brave'.
The video features two gay men kissing at a dinner table while their dad looks on in surprise.
The ad sparked outrage by homophobes and complaints were sent to the Advertising Standards Authority in South Africa.
The Anova Health Institute said, "The aim of the advertisement is not to shock, but to attract our market through creating scenarios to which they relate."
"With 4.9 million South Africans - 10% of the population - identifying as homosexual, this is a matter of public interest and urgency, and we do not have the luxury of tiptoeing around the issues."
Speaking about the complaints, the Anova Health Institute said, "We have exercised our right to freedom of expression, contained in clause 16 of the Bill of Rights, which states 'Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which includes freedom to receive or impart information or ideas.'"
According to Gay Star News some of the complaints say the ad is a "step too far", "offensive and disgusting" and "inappropriate".
