Transphobia denier Germaine Greer goes on transphobic rant

2015-10-24
Germaine Greer has addressed a petition calling for her to be banned from visiting Cardiff University due to her history of making transphobic remarks. She had been booked to give a talk to students. But rather than apologise for offence caused, she has dug herself an even deeper hole. germaine Earlier this year, she told students at the Cambridge University that transphobia doesn’t exist. Try telling that to the bereft loved ones of transgender men and women who have been killed or taken their own lives because of their gender struggle. Now, in a new interview with the BBC, she has outright said that she does not consider transgender women to be women at all. “Apparently people have decided that because I don’t think that post-operative transgender men are women I’m not to be allowed to talk,” she said of the petition. She also claimed to know many cisgender women who don’t believe so-called “male to female transgender people” “look like, sound like or behave like women”. When her interviewer asked if she could understand why her comments could be hurtful, she replied: “People are hurtful to me all the time! Try being an old woman, for goodness’ sake. “People get hurt all the time. I’m not about to walk on eggshells.” She added that she would use female pronouns “as a courtesy” if the transgender person requested it.
