This marks the first time an Asian state has legalised same-sex marriages

Words: Steve Brown

Taiwan has become the first ever Asian state to legalise same-sex marriage.

In a landmark decision today (May 17), Taiwan’s legislature voted to legalise same-sex marriage and the new law will come into practice as early as next Friday (May 24).

Couples will now be able to register their marriages with government agencies.

The new legislation allows same-sex couple most of the rights given to heterosexual couples under the civil code as well as granting one of the partners the right to adopt a child who is a blood relative.
