'Schitt's Creek' becomes first ever TV show to sweep all four Emmys for acting

Deserved, David!

Make like Moira Rose and crack out the delicious fruit wine, because Schitt's Creek has made Emmys history.

The Canadian comedy series, which came to an emotional, uplifing conclusion with its sixth and final series earlier this year, cleaned up on Sunday (20 September) during TV's biggest night of the year.

With 15 nominations, Schitt's Creek had already set a new record for most Emmy nominations for a comedy in its final series, and after taking home 9 of them on the night, the show now officially has the most Emmys for single season for a comedy, ever.

With Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy winning their #Emmys tonight, that means our little Canadian show is the first comedy to ~ever~ sweep all four acting categories, and that is absolutely wild 🇨🇦

They included Emmys for all four of the show's main stars: Eugene Levy (Johnny Rose), Dan Levy (David Rose), Catherine O'Hara (Moira Rose) and Annie Murphy (Alexis Rose).

The clean sweep marks the first time all four acting awards have been won by the same show - both comedy and drama.

During his acceptance speech, a shocked Dan Levy - who has won widespread acclaim for his sensitive and hilarious portrayal of pansexual David on the series - said: "Our show at its core is about the transformational effects of love and acceptance and that is something that we need more of now than we've ever needed before."

He added on Twitter later, somewhat less eloquently: "What the actual f**k!"

Speaking to Attitude earlier this year, Dan Levy reflected on Schitt's Creek's quietly revolutionary handling of stories surrounding sexuality and acceptance.

"It felt in a way kind of irresponsible not to seize that opportunity and tell stories that meant something, and stories that I haven't really seen that much on television", said Levy, who identifies as gay.

"So, in that capacity it was really important. I was really proud of the work that we did, and I really loved the stories that we're able to tell."

All six seasons of Schitt's Creek are available to stream on Netflix now in the UK.
