Ruby Rose says playing Batwoman is a “win” for the LGBT community.

The Orange is the New Black actress took to Instagram in August to announce the news that she was taken on the role of the iconic DC Comic book character – who will be introduced in a crossover episode of The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl.

The standalone series – which is slated for a 2019/2020 release – follows the superhero, whose real name is Kate Kane, who is described as a “highly trained street fighter with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind”.

Batwoman first appeared in the DC Comics universe as a romantic interest for Batman and since 2006 she has been openly gay when she was reintroduced in the comics as a lesbian of Jewish decent.

Now, speaking to TV Week magazine, the gender-fluid actress said playing the character “fulfils my life mantra of, ‘Be the person you needed when you were young’.

“I can’t speak on behalf of everyone in the LGBTIQ community, but I know any win for anyone in our community is a win for all.”
