Canada’s federal government have announced a $450,000 grant to help Pride Toronto improve the safety of LGBT communities.
Federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and executive director of Pride Toronto, Olivia Nuamah, revealed the news at a conference over the weekend.
Morneau – who is also the MP for Toronto Centre - said: “For too long, the [LGBT+] community has encountered injustice from various institutions in our society in way that have prevented people from living their lives more fully and contributing their strengths to our country.”
The money will fund a brand-new initiative which will help to address ‘institutional and systemic barriers that lead to negative outcomes for [LGBT] communities, especially those that they have when encountering the criminal justice system’.
Nuamah added that a new action plan to improve the relationship between the LGBT community in the Canadian city and the criminal justice system.
