Something New is relatable on too many levels

2018-05-23

The new gay rom-com short Something New is set to be released online tomorrow.

Directed by TJ Marchbank, the film follows the unlucky-in-love Jonah (Ben Baur) whose fear of intimacy is influenced by memories of his ex-boyfriend Scott (Doug Locke) – a situation we can all relate to.

He resorts to talking with his best friend Val (Ruby Hanger) as well as finding solace in a steamy rendezvous with a Grindr hookup Adam (Johnny Silbilly) – again another relatable aspect.

However, when Adam suggests they go on a date, things take an awkward turn for Jonah.

Baur got the idea of the new short film from an ex who “had all these hangups about how we met” and said the film depicts how love can be found in a hopeless place.

He told the HuffPost: “Showing the struggle that we, as members of the [LGBT+] community, face day-to-day is so important.

“However I wanted to tell a story about a guy whose struggles are that of any heroine in any mainstream rom-com, who just happens to be gay.

“I think that kind of representation is just as important.”

The film first debuted at Outfest Los Angeles last year has was well-received by the LGBT+ community.

Bauer added: “I hear a lot of people say that it just makes them feel good which makes me feel good.”

Something New will be available online on Thursday (May 24).
