Listen: Meryl Streep’s covers Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance

We’ve always loved Meryl Streep because she’s a gal who’s not afraid to take on an acting challenge. After belting out the ABBA hits in Mamma Mia! alongside her more recent appearance in Into the Woods, Oscar winner Meryl Streep will again dust off the singing chops to perform a grungy rock cover of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance for her next film, the rock and roll flavoured Ricki and the Flash. Meryl Streep In preparation for the role, the 66-year-old triple Oscar winner - who plays a woman who abandons her family to live out her dream of being a rock star - learnt to play guitar with Neil Young, and enlisted co-star Rick Springfield for help with working on her vocals. Director Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia) told Billboard that Street didn’t use playback during production. “We're not sweetening it up on the soundtrack. It's performance! I have to say with our band - I shouldn't say it, but I want to say what I feel in my heart - Ricki and the Flash blow away every original," he said. Written by Diablo Cody (Juno), the film’s soundtrack also includes covers of I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, and Pink’s party anthem Get the Party Started. Ricki and the Flash opens in UK cinemas on 18 September. Words by TROY NANKERVIS.
