Lana Wachowski is writing and directing a fourth Matrix movie with the original cast returning.

Back in 1999, the Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lilly, helmed the first instalment of the hit sci-fi franchise – which went on to spawn two sequels – and starred the likes of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and Laurence Fishburne.

Although the third movie saw the demise of the main characters Neo (Reeves) and Trinity (Moss), Lana Wachowski has confirmed she is working on a fourth film with Reeves and Moss reprising their iconic roles- making her the first out, transgender director is helming a Hollywood blockbuster.

In a statement to Variety, Lana said: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich confirmed the fourth film is going ahead and said: “We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana.

“Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in the Matrix universe.”

The film is set to begin production in 2020.
