Javicia Leslie cannot wait to spread her rubberised wings after being cast as television’s first black Batwoman.
This really is super news.
The American actress, who identifies as bisexual, will wear the famous cape and cowl when she takes on the title role in the TV show’s upcoming second season.
“I am extremely proud to be the first black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television,” Javicia says.
“And as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this ground-breaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” she adds.
Best known for her appearance in US sitcom God Friended Me, Javicia, 33, will star as Ryan Wilder, who is described as “likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.”
She’ll suit up in place of predecessor Ruby Rose, who shocked fans when she called it quits in May.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” she said in a statement.
“This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and Los Angeles.”
The Australian actress – who underwent surgery in September after injuring herself while performing a stunt in the show – congratulated Javicia.
“This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!” she wrote.
See, no hard feelings. Unless she’s being a Joker…
The series is scheduled to air next year.
