Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw star in first trailer for BBC One's 'A Very English Scandal'

The Jeremy Thorpe scandal will be dramatised in the upcoming three-part miniseries.

The first trailer for BBC One's upcoming three-part BBC One drama A Very English Scandal has been released.

Starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, the period miniseries dramatises the Jeremy Thorpe scandal in 1970s Britain, in which MP and Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe (Grant) was charged conspiring to murder his former lover, Norman Scott (Whishaw), in order to keep their relationship secret.

A Very English Scandal marks Grant's first British television role in 20 years, while London Spy star Whishaw returns to the BBC for another LGBT-themed series after appearing in BBC Four's Queers last year.

The series has been adapted from John Preston's book of the same name by Queer as Folk writer Russell T Davies, and has been being helmed by former EastEnders producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins and two-time Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Frears.

A Very English Scandal will premiere on BBC One on 20 May.
