With just over a month to go until the biggest night in the Hollywood calendar, 2017's Oscar nominees have finally been announced - and it's good news for gay drama Moonlight.

The gay coming-of-age drama has racked up eight nominations, including one for ‘Best Picture’, and will be hoping for more major awards glory after scooping the same award at the Golden Globes earlier this month. Directed by Barry Jenkins – who is also nominated for the ‘Best Director’ – the film documents the life of a young, black gay kid growing up in an down-and-out part of Miami as he transitions from child, to adolescent, to adult. You can read our exclusive feature on the film in Attitude’s February issue, available to download and in shops now. Meanwhile, modern musical classic La La Land leads the 2017 Oscars race with a mammoth 14 nominations, tying the all-time record currently held by 1950's All About Eve and 1997's Titantic. The David Chazelle-directed film, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as a pair of budding entertainers living in modern day Los Angeles, will go head-to-head with Moonlight in the 'Best Picture'category, while Gosling and Stone pick up nominations for 'Best Actor' and 'Best Actress'. Sci-fi drama Arrival tied Moonlight with eight nominations, though its critically-acclaimed star, Amy Adams, missed out on an expected 'Best Actress' nod.

The 89th Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on February 26, 2017, at 5.30pm PST.
