MARRIAGE VOTED DOWN IN N.I
MARRIAGE VOTED DOWN IN N.I

In a narrow vote in the Northern Irish chamber, Stormont, politicians rejected a motion calling for same-sex couples to be given equal marriage rights.

The motion was proposed by Sinn Fein and the Green Party, but was blocked by members of the Democratic Unionists (DUP).

LGBT campaigners held a rally outside the Stormont Assembly afterwards to voice their disapproval.

Although the motion was only rejected by five votes, rules in Stormont mean that a motion like this requires cross party support. Unfortunately, only 3 members of the DUP voted in favour of the proposal.
